Dusty PlayStation 3 Warranty Drama

A bit of drama has been brewing on the net over the past couple of weeks regarding a PlayStation 3 that was mailed to Sony for repair, only to be rejected from warranty coverage because the system was too dusty. The jilted system’s owner took his case to the people via the internet, and the story gained some quick momentum when various communities set out to make Sony clarify its position on dust and the PS3.
Today, Sony finally agreed to release pictures of the dusty PS3 to validate its claims that the amount of dust on and in the console posed a health threat to the repair technician, an issue that could only be resolved if the system’s owner paid $150 for off-warranty repair. Though it’s obvious the console in question wasn’t shown much love at home, after the near-sentient clods of dust we’ve encountered while doing computer repair in college, the PS3 really doesn’t look that bad.
